It’s Father’s Day this weekend, so that means Mesachie Lake will be hosting the annual muscular dystrophy ball tournament and auction, clearly one of the most impressive events held in our area.
Since the early 1980s, when it became an Muscular Dystrophy Canada fundraiser, the event has raked in more than half a million dollars. That’s pretty amazing for a small community, although it’s the efforts of fire departments across the Cowichan Valley that make it happen.
If you have never attended the event before, you owe it to yourself to check it out. The auction itself is worth the visit, with auction-meister Jeff Abbott providing a unique brand of humour.
Not only will you be impressed with the generosity that makes this event so successful, you’ll also be blown away by the sense of community.
We’ve always known here at Cowichan Lake just how big the muscular dystrophy ball tournament and auction is in Mesachie Lake every June.
Now, with the publicity gained from the 30-kilometre walk the Cowichan Valley firefighters will make Thursday, in full gear, the event that was already in the high atmosphere of fundraisers has moved into the stratospshere. The fundraising is definitely serious business, as the $45,000 raised last year proves, but they have so much fun doing it and the public joins in for the fun and generosity.
We can’t even imagine how much will be raised this weekend, at the 30th annual event, although we suspect some records will fall.
