At Large: girl thinks pink

Think Pink: It’s not hard to spot Kalliana King in a crowd. She’s the youngster with the bright pink hair. No, it’s not a fashion statement. “Kalli came home from school over a month ago with a mission,” writes proud mom Cathy King “She's eight-years-old and her friend had shaved his head for cancer last year. She asked me ‘Mom, can I shave my head for any cause’. Of course I said yes and didn't think anymore of it. “About a week later she announced she was going to shave her head for muscular dystrophy to help raise money for all those kids in wheelchairs.”

Kalli’s family have always been strong supporters of the cause. Dad Mike King recently celebrated ten years as a Cowichan Bay firefighter and has been an active participant in the department’s annual Boot Drive in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Kalli’s grandfather, Dave Ferguson, retired as fire chief of the Cowichan Bay Fire Department earlier this year and has served on the National Board for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

Her uncle, Cam Ferguson, is Cow Bay Fire Dept. deputy chief and South Island Advisor for MD Canada. A close family friend, Adam Sohye, suffers from the effects of the neuromuscular disease. Still, Cathy says she was “taken aback” with her daughter’s decision. “She's done it all on her own, written a letter to attach to her pledge form and approached neighbours, family & friends.

She has a goal to raise $500 and will be opening an account at Island Savings in order to keep her money safe until the big day!” Kalli will have her head shaved June 20th as a part of Mesachie Lake Ball Tournament. And that’s where the pink ‘do comes in. Kalli has colored her hair in honor of the event.
